Role of the registered counsellor.

Our psychological services support and promote the well-being and personal development of individuals, families, groups, and communities.

In our work, we identify mental health difficulties and clarify and contain the presenting problem. We explore options, develop strategies and increase self-awareness to resolve issues.

Our psychometric assessments focus on intelligence, ability, aptitude, learning potential, personality, and interests.

About James Smuts

James is a qualified registered counsellor who operates from spacious offices in Durbanville. He graduated from the Pearson Institute of Higher Education (BPsych) after completing his 720 hours of practical work. During this time, he worked at community clinics and schools, being exposed to a wide variety of challenges. He is registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) (PRC 003 0279). Topics of interest include Post Traumatic Stress (PTS), Depression, Anxiety, LQBTQA issues and specific needs in children and adolescents.

 

Aim: Promoting mental health by assisting people working through challenging life transitions are James’ goal. He firmly believes in applying various therapeutic techniques to facilitate change, stimulate personal growth, and develop skills that could enhance psychosocial adjustment.

 

James’s counselling experience includes, but is not limited to:

  • Suicidal ideation.
  • Bereavement and grief.
  • Dealing with life transitions.
  • Depression.
  • Sexual assault.
  • LGBTQI issues in adolescents and adults.

  • ADHD.

Spending time outside the office: reading on current affairs, spending time in the gym and horse riding.
